Can’t figure out how you’re going to improve the look of your garden? Check out this post from Sunset.com for some ideas to inspire you. It features the Venice backyard of lovely couple Josh Crosby and Amy Swift Crosby.
The Crosby family worked with talented designer Steve Siegrist (stevesiegristdesign.com) to transform their “barely usable” backyard into a space that can now be described as a “cozy family retreat”.
In the first slide, you’ll see the “before” photo and how shabby and unkempt the whole place looks. The second slide will amaze you. It’s like a totally different garden!
Siegrist used salvaged redwood boards to add visual interest to the cement block wall. He also added a comfortable cushioned-topped seating area, made cuter with an array of plush pillows in different patterns and designs.
There’s also a dining area where the family can get together for a barbecue party or just a regular family lunch or dinner. Siegrist incorporated a fire pit into the look of the garden, not just to play up the aesthetics but also to provide comfortable warmth during chilly weather. As for the flooring, he made use of gravel patio to allow for permeable paving.
Using these ideas will certainly boost the appeal of your garden. Other than these, you may also want to use creative lighting not only to make your garden usable 24 hours a day but also to give it a brand new look. A couple of spotlights, tea lights, DIY lamps and tiki torches here and there are more than enough to do the trick.
But of course, you need to keep it as minimal as possible. A cluttered garden doesn’t look nice at all. Keep it simple but striking, and you’ll surely love the results. On top of it, be sure to keep your lawn neat and tidy. Uncut lawns–no matter how beautiful the garden design is–can ruin its overall look.
